Saving your way: how digital banking can make better savings habits easier

People don't necessarily need more reasons to save. They need saving to fit more naturally into the way they already manage their money.

That is particularly relevant for young working adults, who may want to build a savings habit but are balancing rent, bills, everyday spending and other financial priorities. When there is little left at the end of the month, putting money aside can feel easier said than done.

This year's UK Savings Week, running from 21–27 September, is putting a particular focus on this audience and encouraging people to find an approach to saving that works for them.

As more of everyday banking moves online, digital experiences have a role to play too.

Making starting small feel achievable

For someone with competing financial commitments, the idea of saving a large amount each month can feel unrealistic.

Starting small can be more manageable.

The amount may not seem significant at first, but building a habit around what someone can realistically afford can make saving feel more achievable and sustainable.

Digital banking can support this by making it easier for customers to access and manage their savings alongside their everyday finances. The wider industry is also exploring different digital tools and approaches to encourage regular saving, helping customers find methods that suit their circumstances.

The important thing is not necessarily having every possible feature. It is giving people an experience that makes taking that first step straightforward.

Bringing saving into everyday banking

Saving doesn't happen separately from the rest of someone's financial life. Customers already use digital banking to check balances, make payments, move money and manage their accounts. Increasingly, they expect to be able to manage their savings through the same channels.

That can make a difference to how easy saving feels. When savings are accessible through familiar digital channels, customers don't have to treat saving as something completely separate from their everyday money management.

For financial institutions, this means thinking about the experience around saving as well as the savings product itself. How easy is it to find the right product? How straightforward is it to apply? Can customers easily access and manage their account afterwards?

These may seem like simple questions, but each interaction contributes to the overall customer experience.

Making progress visible

Starting a savings habit is one thing. Sticking with it is another.

Seeing progress can help make saving feel more tangible. Whether someone is building an emergency fund or putting money aside for something specific, being able to see how their savings are developing can provide a sense of momentum.

Digital banking has made it easier for customers to have a clearer view of their finances and how their money is moving. The wider industry is also looking at ways digital tools can help people set objectives, make regular contributions and keep track of their progress.

But progress won't look the same for everyone. For one person, it might mean putting away £20 a month. For another, it could be a much larger amount. The important thing is having an approach that feels realistic and sustainable.

Recognising that saving your way means different things

This is perhaps the most important part of this year's UK Savings Week message. There isn't one reason to save, one amount to save or one approach that works for everyone.

Someone saving for a first home may have very different priorities from someone building an emergency fund. Someone with a regular monthly income may approach saving differently from someone whose income changes from month to month.

Circumstances can change too. An unexpected expense or a change in financial priorities can mean that what was realistic one month isn't realistic the next.

Digital banking should reflect that reality rather than assume every customer will follow the same journey. For financial institutions, that means considering how digital experiences can provide the flexibility and accessibility customers need as their circumstances change.

A better savings experience starts with understanding the customer

Technology isn't going to determine how people save, and it shouldn't try to. What it can do is make the experience around saving more accessible, convenient and straightforward.

As customers increasingly manage their finances through digital channels, the way they discover, open and manage financial products will continue to shape their overall experience with their financial provider.

UK Savings Week is a good opportunity to step back and recognise that there is no single definition of a good savings habit. People will save different amounts, for different reasons and in different ways.

The role of financial services is to make it easier for them to find an approach that works.
