Sandstone Technology: Transforming Banking Experiences For Over Three Decades
Thirty years ago, banking looked entirely different. If you wanted to check a balance, transfer funds, or open an account, you lined up at a branch or waited on hold with a call centre. But in the mid-1990s, a small team in Sydney looked at the emerging digital world and saw a massive gap: financial institutions weren’t giving customers the tools to service their own accounts.
That insight became the foundation of Sandstone Technology. What started as a focused attempt to solve customer self-service has grown into three decades of continuous innovation across digital account opening, loan origination, and core digital banking platforms.
To mark this milestone and capture the energy of how far we’ve come, we’ve produced a special 30th-anniversary video that brings our story, our people, and our vision to life.
“Thirty years ago, we were just two people in a spare room with zero income, surviving solely by drawing down on our mortgage. Sustained by the belief that we could build software to transform the future of banking, we endured gruelling hours of coding, endless cold calls to financial institutions just to find someone willing to talk to us, a terrifyingly low bank balance, and absolutely no guarantee that anyone would ever buy from a tiny, two-person startup.
In those early years, I wore every imaginable hat—from developer to salesperson and everything in between. Today, I am filled with immense pride seeing how Sandstone Technology has grown into a global team supporting clients across multiple countries. My deepest gratitude goes to everyone who took that leap of faith with us: the colleagues who believed in our vision when nothing was guaranteed, and the early clients who trusted us before our name meant anything. While our roots remain firmly planted in that initial Sydney breakthrough, the last thirty years have seen us grow far beyond Australia's borders. Today, we actively partner with and serve financial institutions across Australia, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom.
To support these markets on a truly global scale, we rely on a closely integrated international team. Our regional experts on the ground stay close to the unique regulatory shifts and market trends affecting mutual banks, credit unions, and financial institutions in their respective areas. At the same time, our dedicated team members in the Philippines work hand-in-hand with our regional hubs, providing the collaborative technical support and operational agility required to keep our platforms running flawlessly around the clock. We are a unified global team, built to support local banking communities.

How We Build Real-World Solutions
Staying relevant for thirty years requires a clear sense of identity. In tech, it is incredibly easy to chase every new trend or build features just because you can. At Sandstone, our product roadmap is guided entirely by our core purpose: creating simpler, safer, and sustainable banking for everyone.
If a conceptual product or feature doesn't genuinely improve the experience for the end-customer or the bank staff working behind the scenes, we don’t build it.
We also don't make these decisions in isolation. We work side-by-side with our existing customers, testing and measuring new concepts together to ensure they solve actual, real-world problems before they ever go live.
